The EU is a unique, highly complex supranational entity, which over the last few decades has emerged as a global leader in the realm of marine and environmental policy through a mixture of exclusive legal competencies and soft power mechanisms.
In my research, I have long been fascinated by tensions between the EU's normative aspirations (e.g. peace and democracy in Europe, environmental preservation, citizen and human rights) and its advancement of geopolitical and protectionist power. I am increasingly interested in how these tensions play out with respect to the EU's "green and blue growth" policies, rising Euroscepticism, and (re)militarization after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
